The Line Cook Training Program is a comprehensive, up to 17-week, full-time employment readiness and skills training program designed to support unemployed or underemployed Albertans in launching a successful career in the food service industry. Through structured classroom learning, immersive practical kitchen environments, essential skills development, and supported work experience placements, participants build the technical skills and professional workplace behaviors employers are looking for.

The Line Cook Training Program lets you sharpen your skills in a hands-on, practical kitchen environment while learning what it really takes to succeed in the food service industry.

From mastering the basics of food prep and safety to learning how to keep pace during a busy service, you’ll build confidence, discipline, and teamwork skills that employers look for. With guidance from experienced instructors and career support from Bredin Centre, you won’t just learn how to cook ,you’ll learn how to show up, stand out, and grow in a professional kitchen.

Graduates leave prepared to step directly into employment or pursue further training within the food service sector.

This no-cost training program is funded by the Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services, helping Albertans connect to meaningful employment while strengthening Alberta’s workforce.

Participants gain practical, transferable skills that apply across a wide range of food service settings, including restaurants, hotels and resorts ,catering operations, institutional kitchens, and hospitality environments. Training emphasizes food safety, teamwork, time management, communication, and adaptability, equipping participants to thrive in fast-paced, real-world kitchen environments. The program also focuses on building professionalism, reliability, and strong work habits that are key qualities valued by employers.

Career Pathway Support

Bredin Centre staff provide individualized guidance and support, helping participants align their training with their personal circumstances, interests, and labour market opportunities. Upon completion of the Line Cook Training Program, participants are connected to employment opportunities and graduate workforce-ready, equipped with foundational culinary skills, essential workplace competencies, and the confidence to succeed in entry-level food service /beginner chef roles or continue along a culinary career pathway.

General Eligibility

Participants must be labour market destined, meaning you are ready, willing, and able to seek and accept employment in the culinary field  participate in training that supports progress toward employment.

Job seekers must also:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be an Alberta resident
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or convention refugee
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be unemployed, marginally employed, or underemployed
  • Complete a full assessment at Bredin Centre
