What is the Carpenter Assistant Training Program?

Delivered by Bredin Centre for Career Advancement in partnership with Omnia Training, the Carpenter Assistant Training Program is designed for people who are new to the trades or looking to start a career in construction. Throughout the program, you’ll learn how construction sites operate, how to work safely with tools and materials, and how to support carpentry and framing crews in real-world environments.

This no-cost training program combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience to prepare graduates for entry-level roles such as Carpenter Assistant, Framer Assistant, Construction Laborer and General Construction Support Worker. The Carpenter Assistant Training Program is suited to people who want to move into stable employment in construction and are ready to commit to practical, physically active work.

This program is funded by the Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services to support unemployed Albertan’s in developing the skills they need to connect to sustainable employment and to strengthen Alberta’s workforce.

Informed Career Decision Making

At the start of the program, we help you explore whether a career in carpentry is the right fit for you. You’ll hear from experienced industry professionals who share what working in carpentry is really like on a day-to-day basis.

You’ll gain a clear understanding of what employers expect, how to succeed in the role, and what long-term career pathways are available as you gain experience and progress in the industry.

Training and Certification

Training is delivered through a combination of online learning and in-person practical sessions at Omnia Training. You’ll build foundational carpentry knowledge, strong safety awareness, and practical jobsite skills needed to support construction crews.

You’ll gain hands-on experience using common hand and power tools, measuring and marking materials, reading basic construction drawings, and carrying out essential framing and carpentry tasks.

Support to Employment

Our experienced team supports your long-term career goals by helping you move toward apprenticeships or ongoing employment in carpentry and other trades.

After completing the Carpenter Assistant Training Program, you’ll be better prepared to apply for entry-level construction roles in Edmonton. We also provide support with job search preparation, next steps, and ongoing career development in the construction sector.
